M. Sc projects
If you wish to spend your master thesis internship with us and learn about hyperpolarized NMR strategies, get involved in international projects and get to know national and international figures leading the field come see me. I will be happy to show the lab around and discuss potential projects.
This proget is carried out in collaboration with the group of Prof Michele Maggini. It focuses on the synthesis of fullerene‑based nitroxides as molecular probes and on the investigation of light‑driven NMR hyperpolarization mechanisms, with the goal of boosting signal sensitivity far beyond thermal equilibrium.
It is an excellent opportunity for a motivated student interested in combining organic chemistry and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The work has strong potential to lead to a scientific publication.
Skills acquisition:
Synthesis and purification of functionalized [60]fullerenes
Structural characterization (NMR, MS, IR)
Hands‑on NMR hyperpolarization: sample preparation, optimization, and data interpretation
Chromophore-radical pairs in NMR hyperpolarization
This project explores an innovative strategy to overcome the intrinsic sensitivity limits of NMR by using light to amplify nuclear spin signals in solution. We will investigate chromophore–radical molecular systems in which optical excitation generates electron spin polarization that can be transferred to nuclei, enhancing the NMR signal at room temperature and without the need for microwaves.
Test different chromophore–radical pairs (e.g., porphyrins, fullerenes, organic dyes)
Optimize solvents and concentrations
Measure NMR signal enhancement under light irradiation
Investigate spin‑transfer mechanisms using NMR and EPR
It is a highly interdisciplinary topic at the interface of chemistry, physics, and spectroscopy, with strong potential for innovative results and scientific publications.
Ideal for motivated students interested in experimental research and advanced magnetic resonance techniques, who want to work at the frontier between molecular design and spin physics.
Skills acquisition:
Structural characterization (NMR, EPR)
Hands‑on NMR hyperpolarization: sample preparation, optimization, and data interpretation
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships (Horizon Europe)
MSCA fellowships are highly prestigious, will give you substantial scientific independence and allow you to gain unique transferable skills. Please get in touch if you would like to apply.
The University of Padova and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have created a scholarship programme to enable talented Chinese students to undertake a PhD programme in Padova. (Link Here).
Exceptional opportunities in NMR, chemical synthesis and hyperpolarisation depending on your preferences within the next EU ERCStG project HYPMET. You can contact me even outside the CSC program.
